− The concept behind “Terra Firma” Wellness −
I’ve had a lot of support for my new business venture over the past few weeks. One question that often comes up is “what does ‘Terra Firma’ mean and why did you choose it as a business name?”. Well, let me explain…
“Terra Firma” is Latin for “solid earth” or “firm ground”. It is commonly used lingo in the earthworks and construction business sectors. So how the heck does it relate to pregnancy and nutrition? Seemingly, it does not; at least not directly anyway.
I think of “Terra Firma” as meaning more of a solid foundation. And giving your baby a solid foundation to begin life is one of the best things you can do for their health and wellness. That solid foundation is created by nourishing your own body with good quality, whole foods so that it can properly provide for your growing baby. A mother’s diet and lifestyle is a large part of the groundwork for growing a healthy baby (a father’s diet and lifestyle also has an impact but more on that another day!). The nutrients you feed yourself are combined with your body’s stored nutrients in order to provide for your baby. I often think of a mother as the roots of a tree that give rise to a strong, healthy plant. Without well-fed roots, the plant would not thrive. But with roots that are well watered and well nourished with the correct vitamins and minerals, the plant flourishes. A well-rested, well-fed mama will be able to provide a solid start for her baby.
Nourishing your body and your baby’s body doesn’t stop once your baby is born. If you choose to breastfeed, the same idea of a solid foundation applies on many levels. The foods you eat provide the vitamins and minerals your baby needs to grow and thrive. And after growing a tiny baby for nine months, your own body is possibly (very likely!) depleted in a lot of nutrients. Ensuring your nutrition is top notch throughout and after your pregnancy will help your baby grow, and also help you heal and replenish your vitamin and mineral stores.
So, that’s where my head was at when I came up with “Terra Firma Wellness” as my business name. Hopefully that sheds some light and gives a bit of insight into the origin of the name. Leave a comment below and let me know what you think of the name!
